Bon Ami

Category : Household

My favorite all purpose pre-made scrubber is Bon Ami.  It has been around since 1886 because it works so well and even better, it is non-toxic and biodegradable!  It is great for many surfaces…I use it in the bathroom and kitchen on tile, sinks, counters and even sometimes on pots and pans to scrub away burnt-on food.  It retails for just over $1 – well worth it!

Blackstrap Molasses

Category : Food & Beverages

Blackstrap molasses is a natural sweetener with big health benefits.  I have a tablespoon of it every day to take advantage of the iron, calcium, manganese, copper, magnesium, potassium and vitamin B6 that is packed inside.  It is somewhat of an acquired taste but since I love it, it goes down easily and often works to satisfy my sweet-tooth!

Blackstrap molasses has been said to cure or help with many conditions such as constipation, diabetes, anemia, anxiety, acne, fibroid tumours, insomnia, arthritic pain, high blood pressure, heart palpitations and symptoms of menopause. Some people have reported grey hair returning to the original color.

Hair Mats

1

Category : Beauty

I just ran across this awesome organization that uses hair clippings from salons and dog groomers to make mats that soak up oil from oil spills. It is super easy to donate – please encourage your salon or groomer to participate. The only cost to them is shipping the clippings which I’m sure wouldn’t be that much at all and would be well worth it in exchange for the difference the clippings will make in cleaning oil spills!

Rocco’s Cafe & Pizzeria – Chicago

Category : Dining Out, Food & Beverages

Eric & I were very excited for the opening of Rocco’s as it is super close to home. It is a great addition to the neighborhood and the outdoor seating makes it a must go spot for alfresco dining.

The service has been great thus far so I’m hoping it stays that way as they get busier.

I know bruschetta is a rather simple thing to make but theirs is AMAZING – possibly one of the best versions we’ve ever had. They add balsamic vinegar to it and I think that is what makes it so wonderful.

Eric has tried the minestrone which was good but nothing to rave about.  Our friends ordered the calamari and by looking at the empty plate it must have been decent.

Eric’s brother got the meatball sandwich which is meatballs, marinara and provolone on baguette along with the fries and was pleased.  I ordered the grilled veggie sandwich – eggplant, zucchini, red peppers, mushrooms and pesto mayo on baguette with a side of marinara and instead of fries I got a side of spaghetti with marinara sauce.  The side of marinara didn’t actually come with my sandwich so I had to ask for it to be brought out.  Eggplant can be difficult to eat on a sandwich as the skin is tough to bite through.  They cut it in spears which makes it impossible to bite.  I tried a few times and found myself with a spear of eggplant hanging out of my mouth after sliding out of the sandwich, I’m not a fan of  eating with my hands so holding it in my hand with I attempted to bite off a chunk didn’t work so I eventually removed all of the eggplant spears from the sandwich.  It was good, not amazing but I’m sure I’ll order it again – I’ll just skip the eggplant though.

Eric is a HUGE salad fan so he ordered the chopped salad which he quickly announced was the worst salad he had ever had!  Their online menu says it is mixed greens, tomato, roasted peppers, artichokes, bacon, blue cheese and Italian vinaigrette, however I recall seeing it also had broccoli and noodles and who knows what else.  To start they forgot the bacon so Eric had to ask for a small bowl of bacon to sprinkle on.  After that he just thought it was not good…it was super WATERY – YUCK…he didn’t even come close to finishing it.

Next we’ll give the pizza a try – I’ll let you know what we think

Newman’s Own Organics – Premium Pet Food

Category : Animals, Food & Beverages

Eating organic food is very important to me so it is important that I offer the same high standards of food to my dog Winston.  He is a big fan of the chicken and rice dry dog food.  The great thing I can by it in 25lb bags – it lasts forever but it is nice to buy in bulk – many other natural dog foods at the store don’t come in bags that large.  I purchase mine at Whole Foods Market but they also have it at Target.

Check out their page – What’s In It – What’s Not!

All after-tax profits from Newman’s Own and Newman’s Organics are given away to educational and charitable organizations so you can feel good about your purchase in more ways than one!

They DO NOT test their food on animals in laboratories as many companies do…they do testing in labs WITHOUT animals and then animals in shelters test it out to give their seal of approval on the flavor
