May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Category : Beauty, Fashion, Garden/Patio

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. There are more than 1 million skin cancers diagnosed each year in the United States. That’s more than cancers of the prostate, breast, lung, colon, uterus, ovaries and pancreas combined. And the number of skin cancers has been on the rise for the past few decades.

I love this Isola wide-brim straw hat from J. Crew for $58

Things you should do:

Limit Direct Sun Exposure during Midday

Cover Up

Use a Sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or Higher

Wear a Hat

Wear Sunglasses That Block UV Rays

Avoid Tanning Beds and Sunlamps

Self exams are also very important. Use these steps to perform regular self exams.

  • Examine your body front & back in a mirror, then right and left sides with arms raised.
  • Bend elbows. Look carefully at forearms, upper underarms and palms.
  • Look at the backs of your legs and feet, the spaces between your toes and on the sole.
  • Examine the backs of your neck and scalp with a hand mirror. Part hair for a closer look
  • Finally, check your back with a hand mirror.

Nike’s Shoe Recycling & Sustainability Program

Category : Fashion

If you’re throwing away your old shoes, please think twice before doing it again.  If they’re just gently used then donate them to someone who could use them, however if you think they’re beyond hope, think again!  Nike will recycle your old kicks and turn them into sports surfaces, playgrounds and even new Nike products!

Click to find out where to drop your shoes off.  If you live in Chicago I know you can drop them off at the Nike Town on Michigan Avenue.  If it is easier you can mail them in.

Here Nike explains the impact:

What difference can the shoes off your feet make? Picture this: since we started Reuse-A-Shoe in 1990, we’ve collected more than 21 million pairs – in other words, enough to create a chain of athletic shoes that goes all the way around the world almost four times.

Reusing old athletic shoes also decreases the need for virgin rubber and other materials, decreasing the environmental impact of using new materials when building courts, tracks, fields and playgrounds.

But the impact of Reuse-A-Shoe goes beyond keeping old kicks out of the trash. As one of Nike’s longest-running environmental programs, Reuse-A-Shoe has been blazing the trail for product sustainability and environmentally preferred business practices since 1990.

Preserve Recycled Tootbrushes

Category : Beauty

I admit that it’s not the most eco-friendly thing to have an electric toothbrush, but when I’m traveling I’m quite proud of the brush I take with me.  Preserve makes their toothbrushes with recycled plastic – mostly from yogurt containers which are normally not even recycled!  They’re BPA free and cruelty free.

Preserve Adult Toothbrushes

 Features:
• Handle is made from 100% recycled plastic, including Stonyfield Farm® yogurt cups
• Curved, easy to grip handle makes it easy to reach every part of your teeth and gums
• Soft, virgin nylon bristles placed in a tri-level configuration with softer outer rows to protect your gums and tooth enamel
• Available in Medium, Soft, and Ultrasoft

I purchase mine at Whole Foods Market

The great part is that when you’re ready to get rid of your razor you can send it back in a postage paid envelope.  Preserve toothbrushes, razor handles and tongue cleaners can have a second life as plastic lumber for park benches, decks and more! Print out this postage-paid label to return them to be reborn.

Take a Whiff!

Take A Whiff!® Natural Deodorant

I’m currently loving my Take A Whiff! deodorant by Pristine Beauty, Inc.  This yummy creamsicle scented deodorant is Aluminum Free, Paraben free, Phthalates free, Proplene Glycol Free, Cruelty Free and Vegan.  It may seem a little pricey at $22 HOWEVER, I just looked back through my emails and found that I ordered it on October 9, 2008.  I know that I had a little of my old stuff left when it arrived so lets say I didn’t even start using it until November 1 – today is May 13 and I still have a LOT left!  I imagine I have another month or two left before I’d need another one.  So, being conservative, that would mean it will have lasted me 8 months!  That’s only $2.75 a month which makes it very competitive with those toxic ones you find at drug stores!

The woman who created this and a few other products formulated them after surviving breast cancer and was looking for natural, carcinogen free products to help her grow back her beautiful hair, renew her dull skin and get rid of scarring.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Young Survival Coalition® and the Cancer Prevention Coalition.

Chicago Recycling Coalition

Category : Household

The Chicago Recycling Coalition is a great resource for recycling needs and information for those of us in Chicago.  Keep updated on what the city is doing to improve recycling and find out where you can drop off recyclables now that the blue bag program has ended…some of you may have the new blue bins already but they’re only slowly fazing them in unfortunately for me Lincoln Park does not have them yet.  They even have an A-Z list so you can easily find out where to recycle items from shoes, to carpet and even eyeglasses!

Spring Walk

Category : Uncategorized

Spring is finally here…Eric dropped me off just off Lakeshore Drive today and I walked the rest of the way to work.  It’s a nice walk in the morning as I walk along side Millennium Park.  The Canadian Geese were out as well…you can see one playing in the mud at the bottom of the photo!

Saks Fifth Avenue Chicago Donates A Well!

Category : International

I was just checking out the website of Charity: Water and found this video where they unveiled a new well in Africa given by Saks Fifth Avenue of Chicago.  It is great to know a business in my community - and one the I shop at – is making a difference in providing safe water.  Check out the video!

Well funded by Saks Fifth Avenue Chicago. from charity: water on Vimeo.

From founder, Scott Harrison…

We were humbled last year by the effort of Saks Fifth Avenue employees, customers and vendors that resulted in more than $500,000 raised – enough clean water to transform the lives of over 30,000 people. The heart, passion and generosity by all who participated was incredible.

This year, while we in the developing world are challenged by our economy, those we seek to serve need our help even more. We’ll do our part and make sure 100% of your gifts reach them.

How Meat Contributes to Global Warming

Category : Food & Beverages

  • Pound for pound, beef production generates greenhouse gases that contribute more than 13 times as much to global warming as do the gases emitted from producing chicken. For potatoes, the multiplier is 57.
  • Beef consumption is rising rapidly, both as population increases and as people eat more meat.
  • Producing the annual beef diet of the average American
emits as much greenhouse gas as a car driven more than 1,800 miles.

Maybe it’s time to wean yourself off beef and pork?  You’d make a HUGE impact on the environement by eating less or even no animal products!
