eco core

It’s the perfect time of year for some golfing and it couldn’t be a better time to green your golf game.  Wilson now has Eco Core Golf Balls – the core is made from recycled rubber tires and the packaging is made from recycled board stock.  The balls still comply with all U.S. Golf Association regs but they’re so much better for the environment.  I’m not the best golfer and since I don’t seem to hit the ball too far I never lose my balls – but for those of you that do go through a lot of balls these are so much less of a strain on the environment!

Omega-3s

Most people are under the impression that the best/only way to get their Omega-3s is from fish oil – however, there ARE other ways – one of the being flax seed!  Hemp seeds, walnuts, rapeseed (canola oil) and soybeans are also good sources.

Flax Oil

  • One teaspoon of flaxseed oil contains 2.5 g of ALA.
  • One tablespoon of ground flaxseeds contains 1.6 g of ALA.
  • If flaxseeds are not ground, there is a chance they will not be digested. They can be ground in a blender (works best with a large amount) or coffee grinder, and then stored in the freezer. Ground flaxseeds can be sprinkled on cereal or used in baked goods.
  • Cooking flaxseed oil damages the ALA, but it can be put on warm food such as toast. Flaxseed oil should be kept in the refrigerator.
  • A straight teaspoon of flaxseed oil does not taste so great. Some people use cinnamon-flavored, tablets, or put it on toast or salad to make it taste better.

Calcium

Vegans can easily get plenty of calcium from non-dairy sources.  Even if you’re thinking of going vegan just one day a week you can rest assured that you won’t be calcium deficient.  Think of all the things that are now fortified with calcium!  Even orange juice now has as much if not more calcium than a glass of milk!  I like to eat a spoonful of black strap molasses every night.  It has lots of calcium along with other things such as iron AND it does double duty by fulfilling my sweet-tooth!  Broccoli is another great source of calcium!  Here are lots of great ideas on how to get your calcium…
