Sigg & BPA

Sigg

So apparently the oh so safe Sigg water bottles that I always rave about have BPA liners.  They’ve always been marketed as a healthy and eco-friendly product and now we find out that they could be leaching BPA into our water.  They said they’ve tested the liner repeatedly over the years and they have never found their liners to leach but most of us still don’t trust BPA and would prefer to not have our food or beverages in contact with BPA products.  It isn’t that they said they didn’t have BPA in their liners, its that they never said anything about it.  Keeping silent made consumers assume they were in the clear.

Luckily Sigg is allowing consumers to exchange their bottles for ones with new BPA free liners.  The process is super easy.  Some retailers are offering the program in store.  I’ll be running to my Whole Foods this weekend to make the exchange.  If you don’t have a convenient place to make the exchange you can very easily send it in to Sigg.  You’ll just print the label, fill out the form, package it and send it (at your own cost – but it won’t be much and that’ll be the only cost you’ll incur).  They say to keep the top as an extra for your new bottle - good thinking!

Leachables in Food and Drugs

Category : Food & Beverages

In an August 31 article in Chemical & Engineering News,Sarah Everts addresses the toxic chemicals that leach from food and drug packaging into the actual product we’re ingesting.  We know plastic isn’t great but since with glass you normally have a rubber seal on the top – that rubber seal is a concern.  Even the ink on packaging leaches!

“You will always have leachables,” says Guirag Poochikian, a retired U.S. Food & Drug Administrationregulator who used to evaluate leachables from inhaler devices. “The question is ‘What are they, and what is their safety margin’ ” in humans?

“The common feature of all potential solutions to the leachables problem is that they cost money—sometimes several times the price of the components they replace. It remains to be seen whether consumers are willing to pay more for expensive packaging that reduces leaching into their food and drugs.”

Seventh Generation Dish Liquid

Category : Household

I’m a HUGE fan of Seventh Generation’s products – along with the company itself.  I’m excited to hear they’ve made some great new changes to their dish liquid!

PCR-Dish-Soap

Their new formula cleans 50% more dishes than their current dish liquid, and comes in a new 25oz bottle made from 90% post-consumer recycled plastic, which reduces their reliance on non-renewable resources by 50%. Seventh Generation’s new Environmental Savings Statement looks like this:

  • If every household in the U.S. replaced just one bottle of 25oz petroleum-based dishwashing liquid with our plant-derived product, we could save enough oil to heat and cool 7,400 U.S. homes for a year.

The new formula is still biodegradable, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and can be found in all three of our fragrances: Free & Clear, Lavender & Floral Mint, and Lemongrass & Clementine Zest.

Give it a try! Click here to save $1 on any Seventh Generation dishwashing product. And click here to read the full story of how they developed their new bottle.

Clear the Air This Fall

Category : Health, Household

autumn-windowFall is here – which also means cold nights where you’re less likely to keep the windows open.  How can we eliminate some of the toxic air in our homes?  Read the great blog article below!

By robin – September 21, 2009 (Seventh Generation’s 7 Gen Blog)

Your air, that is. Visit your local retailer for great deals on Seventh Generation products starting this week. As winter approaches, we open our windows less, trapping polluted air inside our homes. The easiest way to keep your home healthy is to use all-natural cleaning products that won’t leave behind harmful chemical residue or pollute indoor air. Here are 9 more ways to clear the air this fall.

  1. Open your windows! EPA research has found that indoor air can contain levels of pollutants 2-5 times higher than the air outside.
  2. Place welcome mats near your doors to remove particles and pollutants carried in on shoes.
  3. Use natural cosmetic, personal care, and feminine hygiene products. Conventional versions of these products often contain many untested and unregulated chemicals.
  4. Dust with a damp cloth to collect and remove dust instead of stirring it back into the air.
  5. Use paper products made from unbleached or non-chlorine bleached recycled paper, which help prevent waste, deforestation, and the pollution created by traditional paper manufacturing.
  6. Store food in #1, #2, #4, or #5 plastic containers, which are less likely to leach unsafe chemicals. Never heat food or serve hot food in plastic of any kind.
  7. Use a chlorine-free dishwasher detergent to keep your dishwasher’s steam free of unhealthy chlorine vapors.
  8. When it’s time to buy new home furnishings, choose those made from solid wood — not pressed woods and particleboard — which often use glues that emit formaldehyde vapors.
  9. Stay informed. When it comes to ideas for healthy homes, there are always useful new things to learn. Share your ideas below.

The Shelter Pet Project – HSUS

HSUS adopt

Winston (my shelter pet) wanted me to share this with all of you…

Do you ever wonder what happens to a cat whose owners go through a nasty breakup over an affair? Or a dog whose cowardly owner leaves him on the side of the road? It’s a sad fact, but these pets end up at animal shelters through no fault of their own.

We can feel sad for the dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and even guinea pigs in shelters, or we can take action and spread the word that shelter animals make great pets. Today we’re proud to announce the launch of an unprecedented advertising campaign aimed at doing just that: The Shelter Pet Project.

Beginning yesterday, several humorous, meaningful Public Service Announcements hit the airwaves across the country. Why wait? You can watch the commercials now and even find a shelter pet of your own at The Shelter Pet Project’s website.

The Shelter Pet Project, a collaborative effort by The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund, and the Ad Council, in partnership with the entire animal welfare community, is designed to encourage pet lovers to make shelters their first choice when they decide they want to add another pet to their family.

Please send a letter in support of this bill!  It is super easy to do online through ASPCA!

H.R. 3501—Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act
Sponsor: Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI)
ASPCA Position: Support
Action Needed: Write to your U.S. representative today to urge him or her to support and cosponsor the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501.

U.S. Representative Thaddeus McCotter has introduced the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act, legislation to allow individuals to claim tax deductions for qualified pet care expenses. The bill would allow any taxpayer who legally owns one or more domesticated animals to take an annual income tax deduction of up to $3,500 for pet care expenses, including veterinary care costs.

Pet care can be expensive—and in these trying economic times, families all over the country have been forced to give up their pets because of financial hardship. The HAPPY Act is important because it will help Americans provide their pets with the medical attention and quality of life they deserve, while also ensuring that more pets get to remain in their loving homes and don’t wind up on the streets or in the already overburdened shelter system.

What You Can Do
Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center online to send an email to your U.S. representative and urge him or her to support and cosponsor the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501.

Rock ‘n Roll Noodle Company – Chicago

rock n roll

I’ve made a new discovery at the Farmer’s Markets in the Loop lately – Rock ‘n Roll Noodle Company!  Next time I see her I’ll see if she has more info on a website or a flyer as I couldn’t find anything when I searched online.  Last week I tried her spring rolls and they were awesome!  Super fresh and full of flavor.  Yesterday I got the Thai sticky rice – sticky rice with blueberries and coconut cream.  She uses ingredients from the farmers that come to the markets she sells at.  She’ll even tell you which farmer the different ingredients are from.  Isn’t that cool!  I love that in addition to buying a delicious lunch item I’m supporting a local chef and local farmers!  I’ll be back with more info next week.  If you’re in the look stop and see her at the market in Federal Plaza on Tuesdays or Daley Plaza on Thursdays.
