Sunday I made it over to Nina to check out her selection of organic cotton yarns.  She carriers a pretty vast selection of colors from Blue Sky Alpacas line of hand spun organic cotton.  I do love the stuff yarn I’ve been using from JoAnn’s but they don’t have many colors and of course it is always better to support a local business :)

Blue Sky Alpacas Handspun Organic Cotton, the perfect addition to our expanding line of feel good yarn. Grown from 100% organic cotton, there are no pesticides, herbicides, agro-chemicals or dyes used in the growing, harvesting or production of the fiber. The yarn is hand spun on drop spindles by a women’s cooperative in Arequipa, Peru. Knitters will love the rich feel of the yarn. They’ll also feel good, knowing that the yarn production is helping preserve a centuries-old tradition of eco-friendly cotton cultivation in Peru and improve the lives of the poverty-stricken women who live there. Working with a local charity, Blue Sky Alpacas employs women to spin Hand Spun Organic Cotton, providing them with a living wage that helps them care for their families and send their children to school.

Pumpkin Doggie Cookies

I just made these pumpkin dog treats for Winston and he loves them!  I used nearly all organic ingredients as well!

3 3/4 C Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 C Pumpkin
1/2 C Apple Sauce
1/2 C Corn Meal
1/4 C Flax Meal
2 T Oil
1 1/3 C Water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, mix together and roll into little balls, smash them down with a fork – like you would for peanut butter cookies, then bake for another 20-25 minutes or more depending on desired crunch.  I made these on the softer side for Winston but if your dog prefers a harder crunch bake them longer – you can’t really over-bake them (unless you burn them) but even if they’re super crunchy and dried out your pooch will still love them. 

Note – if you make them softer keep them in the refrigerator – mine got moldy sitting out.  In the end I decided it was just easier to bake them longer and have them be crunchy so I could keep them out on the counter.  You could also roll them out and cut into cute shapes – this is what I normally do but I was being lazy.  The reason I prefer to roll them out is because then they’re thinner and thus bake faster and more thoroughly.

Vosges Haut-Chocolat creates not only beautiful, but delicious chocolates.  They’re based in Chicago but have boutiques in NYC and Vegas.  I was very excited to read that they also have a passion for the environment and are taking steps to lessen their impact on the environment in their manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and their over-all office environment. 

The highlights:

They’re powered by a 100% renewable energy source – the wind!  This is not only their manufacturing facility but their three boutiques!

Their candy bar boxes and folding cartons are made from 100% recycled paperboard and are recyclable.

Their shipping boxes are made from recycled cardboard and embellished with their logo—printed with water based purple ink.

They’re already using organic ingredients when possible but they’re planning to be 90% organic in 2009!

Easy To Make Body Scrub

I love making my own body scrub.  It is FAR CHEAPER and fun to create my own delightful scents.

You’ll need three ingredients:

Brown Sugar
Safflower Oil
Essential Oil

Put the brown sugar in a cute jar, mix in safflower oil until the sugar is coated and moist but not drowning in oil.  Add essential oil until you reach your desired strength of scent and you’re done!  Super easy!

I like Safflower Oil because it shares many similarities with the naturally occurring lipid components of the human skin and, unlike other oils, it doesn’t clog the pores or irritate follicles and hence is suitable even for acne prone skin.  It contains essential fatty acids like linoleic acid that can smooth, nourish and help damaged skin hold onto moisture better.

URGENT – Adopt A Greyhound!

Dairlyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha Wisconsin will be closing 12/31/09. 900 Greyhounds need to be adopted or they will be euthanized. Please help spread the word. Contact Dairyland Racetrack Adoption Center directly @ 262-612-8256.

Greyhounds are absolutely BEAUTIFUL – I wish I had more space so I could save one of them!

I did actually call the race track myself to confirm they are closing and yes, December 31, 2009 will be their last day.

Why Do Greyhounds Make Good Pets?

Greyhounds have been bred to be fast, healthy, intelligent, sociable, and good tempered. Greyhounds spend most of their lives in the company of other dogs, their trainers, and handlers. Greyhounds have all the advantages of breeding and training when it comes to being a good pet. Their sociability makes them great with other pets (including cats!). Their temperament makes them wonderful around children and friends. Their intelligence and breed make them perfect house pets, clean, quiet, and a loving companion.

What Should I Expect If I Adopt A Greyhound?

The most common misconception concerning greyhounds is that they are hyperactive. It is actually the opposite. Greyhounds are a gentle, mild, quiet animal by nature. A greyhound coming into your home will be very puppy like, curious, and affectionate. Everything is brand new to a retired greyhound, but remember they are very smart. Certain house manners will have to be learned as greyhounds have never seen anything of family life. Stairs, cats, mirrors, cars, etc. are all things you will have to teach your greyhound. When going up stairs, you will need to place your dogs feet one at a time and help it along. Going down stairs requires a firm grip on the collar and a very slow walk down. For any correction, a firm NO! is all that should be needed. If your greyhound even looks at your cat, jump right in and say NO! It will quickly learn the right behavior towards a smaller animal. Never leave your greyhound alone with your family cat until you are sure they get along. Your tone of voice and a firm NO! will quickly let your greyhound know how to behave around your home.
