The new Native Foods location in the Loop is open! I went yesterday for lunch and was super excited to see the restaurant packed! I’m so happy there is such a desire for healthy vegan food in the Loop. I had such a difficult time deciding what to order – that’s what happens to me when I can actually eat everything on the entire menu! I opted for the Chicken Run Ranch Burger – seriously the best faux chicken I’ve ever had – delicious! Already looking forward to going back today. It’s a little pricey but well worth it. My sandwich was $9.95 – if I’d gotten the special of the day I’d have gotten a free side but to be honest this sandwich was totally enough to fill me up.

I’d have to say my favorite part of my weekend in New York City was visiting Lula’s Sweet Apothecary. I was in absolute heaven! The shop is tiny but the selections are vast. It took me forever to decide what I wanted. I had been craving a vanilla malted lately – thinking back on going to Steiner’s Pharmacy in Grand Haven, MI when I was little where I’d get a grilled cheese and vanilla malted. mmmm, sounds so good – I wish I could create a vegan version now – but I need to find where to buy vegan malt powder! Anyway, I was so so excited to find Lula’s has malt powder! But they also have hot fudge brownie sundaes! ugh, the decision was rough! I finally realized I could have a bit of both worlds….I ordered the brownie sundae…it was a warm brownie which I topped with a scoop of mint chip and a scoop of cookies and cream, then added hot fudge, malt powder, whipped cream and a cherry. It was delightful! I can’t even tell you how happy I was to enjoy such a magnificent treat! My sister had a cup of the mint chip and as a non-vegan said it was by far the best ice cream she’d ever had! So it just wasn’t me gushing over it!

I can’t emphasize enough – if you’re ever in NYC you NEED to make it over to Lula’s – it’s well worth the trek and it’s in a super cute neighborhood so do some exploring while you’re there.

They have an entire vegan menu and use Daiya cheese! It was insanely difficult to decide what to order but we opted for the funghi e salsiccia. It was a delicious wood fired pizza with veggie sausage, field mushrooms, Daiya mozzarella and hot peppers. That was definitely the best pizza I’ve had in a long time.

The atmosphere was great – super cute place and our server was fantastic. I’d highly recommend it!

It was so so yummy! It’s been ages since I’ve had a doughnut so I was pretty excited. I purchased it at Lula’s Sweet Apothecary Sunday afternoon – more on that later!! It was very difficult to select a flavor – plain glazed, chai tea, coconut, chocolate with nuts, and a couple of others – I opted for the classic chocolate w/o nuts. By the time my precious chocolate doughnut arrived at LaGuardia it was in rough shape as you can see, but that didn’t change how lovely it tasted…mmm…

Vapiano Chicago Review:

Last week I went to Vapiano on Clark in Chicago with a few girlfriends for dinner. The inside was very modern and I loved all the fresh herbs growing on lighted shelves and as table centerpieces. Unfortunately the bar isn’t open yet but its BYOB so we ran next door and grabbed a bottle of wine – there isn’t a corkage fee. It’s set up Food Life style – if you’re familiar with that restaurant in the bottom of Water Tower Place – meaning you get a card, walk around to different stations and swipe then at the end you check out at the front desk and pay for everything on your card. They make their pasta fresh daily – which is all vegan and they have plenty of vegan sauce options. I believe I read that their pizza dough is not vegan, but that’s fine, there are plenty of pastas and salads. Service was quick for the pasta, I stood there as they whipped it up. I did the pasta primavera but changed to the arrabiata sauce all with wheat pasta. There were barely any veggies and not enough sauce (and coming from me that definitely means something – I don’t like a lot of sauce or a lot of dressing on my salads). Basically I had a ton of wheat fusilli that had an odd texture. Almost seemed over-done, not sure how best to describe it but I wasn’t impressed. The homeless man outside the door ended up with a big container full of wheat fusilli dusted with sauce and no veggies since I’d eaten the few I had started with. Two girls split pizza and salad. They got the salad immediately but the pizza took just over 20 minutes. They seemed happy with their pizza but the salad toppings were sparse. I think they each got one pinenut :) My cousin also got pasta but in addition, had hoped to try the brushcetta. After an hour she told them to forget it. Not sure how pizza can take less time than bruschetta but whatever.

All in all it was ok. It would be a good place to take a large group of people or children as its easy for everyone in the party to get whatever they want and super easy to have split checks. The food wasn’t anything exciting so I really don’t plan on going back.

We were so excited to check out the new eco-friendly, sustainable and vegan friendly Prasino in Wicker Park this past Saturday for brunch to celebrate our anniversary. Prasino has tons of vegan options (tofu scramble, vegan benedict, pancakes and even french toast!). We knew they had only just opened up but we expected a bit more. Upon being seated we were given water and immediately ordered drinks, which thirty minutes later had yet to arrive. Apparently they were pretty backed up at the bar. The second time I asked our server about them, he said the juice was coming but they couldn’t find the soda so Eric opted for a bloody mary instead. I said I just wanted something to drink and I’d take coffee instead. They were just brewing a new pot so it too would be a wait but he would bring me a cup on the house when it was ready. I eventually got my juice and a bit later Eric got his soda. I guess they found the soda and decided he should have that instead of the bloody mary. My coffee never came. I had had the most difficult time selecting an entrée – I never have so many vegan choices. So, I was expecting the most wonder vegan benedict ever. It looked beautiful and the flavors were good but it was insanely dry and not pleasant to eat. I asked the server if I could have some salsa to pour over it. A thick, dry English muffin with dry beans and pico on top was just hard to choke down. Out he came with a half filled condiment cup of salsa. That helped but still wasn’t really enough to get it to where I thought it could be with a proper sauce. Since that salsa was only enough for one piece I gave up and opted to take the other piece home for later. So, there ended our meal, almost two hours later – mostly thanks to the very slow start with drinks. The bill came and we were charged full price for everything – even the drinks which took almost 40 minutes to arrive! I never got my complimentary coffee and what really was the last straw for me was that the server charged 50 cents for the half filled condiment cup of salsa! What? Was he kidding? I basically said I didn’t like my food and couldn’t choke it down, could I have something to make it edible and then I end up paying more money? We left so disappointed. We had figured we’d found our new favorite restaurant, but no. We had been patient and kind all the way through but at the end we were just so unhappy. I understand they’re new but that was just not acceptable.

I’ve been loving the Pret that opened across the street from my office. Today was my third visit and they continue to impress me with delicious healthy options – specifically vegan for me. I discovered that they can do their oatmeal with water or any kind of milk – so I had soy. They steam it with the steam wand on the espresso machine so by the time I got settled back into my desk it had thickened up and was fantastic. It has almonds, hazelnuts, cinnamon, cashew, coconut and supposedly currants but they seemed like raisins to me – either that or they were currants on steroids! Regardless it was delicious. Although the package doesn’t say it, I read online it has maple syrup – which I definitely taste. This was the perfect Friday – gloomy day – breakfast. I’ve always been a Jamba Juice oatmeal fan since they do theirs with soy. Jamba’s is slow cooked and consistency wise better but I love the flavors in the Pret oatmeal – and considering its far closer to my office I think I’ll be sticking to Pret from now on! Love it!

Sunday in Boston my girlfriend Sarah and I went to The Pulse Cafe at 195 Elm Street in Somerville for brunch – so yummy! It was a cool, damp morning so we warmed up with coffee and soymilk and a cinnamon bun! They said it was going to be warm, but it was cold – luckily it was still delicious!

Next up, Sarah ordered the Sweet Potato Quesadilla – Chipotle Mashed Sweet Potatoes and melted Mozzarella, served with Salsa and Sour Cream. Who would’ve thought sweet potatoes would be so good in a quesadilla!

I ordered the Chili Cheese Fries – French Fries covered with Three Bean Chili and Melty Cashew Cheese. Fries are really one of my favorite foods and nothing is better than fries covered in something else delicious.
