Category : Dining Out, Food & Beverages

Sunday while I was out doing errands I made a quick stop at Fritz Pastry for a vegan chocolate cupcake – DELICIOUS!  This isn’t the best photo but last time I went I completely forgot to take one for you :)   Isnt’ it cute how they do the frosting?  So different than everyone else :)

Veg Food at RJ Grunts – Chicago

Category : Dining Out

Yesterday afternoon we had a lovely meal at RJ Grunts in Chicago.  We live a few blocks away and have never been, so we finally made a point to stop over.  Everyone raves about the salad bar and they claim they were the founders of the salad bar idea.  To be honest, I wasn’t drooling over it.  So…I opted for the Portobello Mushroom Sandwich with their homemade cottage fries.  I had everything on the sandwich but instead of the cheese added avocado and it was delicious!

Ok, so I may have found my new heaven!!!  Fritz Pastry is AMAZING!  I’d read online that they have lots of vegan stuff so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out how much they really had AND got to see what an adorable little shop they have!  I will definitely be back very soon so I can sit and enjoy the full experience – and take photos for you!  I went on Thursday night on my way to the veterinarian’s office so I ran in, grabbed a Fritz Cake and a Streusel Cake and ran out the door eating the Fritz Cake.  I’m sorry I wasn’t on top of it enough to take a photo, but let me just tell you.  The Fritz Cake was one of the most amazing cupcakes I’ve ever had!  The chocolate cake part had the most amazing real chocolate flavor and the frosting was slightly salty which made it extremely complementary to the sweet cake.  I can’t rave about this place enough – stay tuned for a better post with more information and lots of photos!

This adorable little wine shop recently opened in our neighborhood.  I figured it was highly unlikely that they’d have an vegan wines but I still wanted to check it out and give our business to the new neighborhood hot spot.  Eric and I both ordered vodka drinks – yes, very odd for a wine bar – and then had sandwiches for dinner.  I had the Grilled Mediterranean Meadley:  Grilled Portabella Mushroom, Zucchini, Eggplant, Squash, Red Onion, Piquillo Pepper and Provolone (but actually no provolone!)  The sandwich was amazing!  I loved that although it was stacked high with flavorful veggies, they were sliced very thiny so it was manageable to eat.  For the side I had the papas asadas with ketchup instead of the aoli.  The papas asadas were great – a lovely change from a side of fries.  Eric had the P.L.T.:  Crispy Prosciutto, Bibb Lettuce, Sundried Tomato Pesto and Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese on baguette.  He liked everything about it except the choice of bread, he’s not a fan of baguette as its a little hard and thus hard to eat!  Next time he’d get it on the softer panini style bread I had.

The ambiance was great and the location can’t be beat so I decided to send an email to the owner requesting they carry a vegan wine and to my surprise, after checking with his distributor, the Le Paradou Rouge they currently offer is vegan!!!  I’m so excited to go back for a glass!  Although their selections will change over time, Chris, the owner, has assured me he’ll have his staff aware of the vegan options at all times.  So, if you’re up for a night out in Chicago for vegan wine, this is your place to go!

Go Cubs!

Category : Dining Out, Food & Beverages, Fun Things To Do

This is great to hear!  I’m not at all a baseball fan but have been to Wrigley once to say I’ve done it.  This summer I’ll be going again when my cousin comes for a visit from England.  I’m glad to hear I’ll have some good food options when I go!  Thanks to Vegetarian Star for sharing this with me!

Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field Makes Vegetarian Friendly Ballpark List

Written by Vegetarian Star on April 13th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Games and Sports.

Wrigley Field made PETA’s top vegetarian friendly ballparks for the first time ever.

The animal rights group’s annual list is out, and the Chicago Cubs were a tie with Prince Fielder’s home turf and home of the Milwaukee Brewers, Miller Field.

Several vegetarian options at Wrigley’s include black bean burgers and vegetable wraps.

With Aramark, a major food supply company to many sports arenas, expanding their vegetarian menu at places like Boston’s Fenway Park, more first time nominees are sure to land on the list next year.

Some winners from last year are taking another victory, like AT&T Park.

San Francisco Giants fans may feel as if they’ve stepped into a fine dining restaurant instead of a ballpark, where vegetable pot stickers, portabello mushroom sandwiches, veggie sushi and edamame can be devoured.

Who was number one?

The Philadelphia Phillies were a repeat winner with Citizens Bank Park offering an eclectic selection of faux crab cakes, faux steak and faux chicken sandwiches as well as faux dogs, wraps and salads.

Vegan Frappuccino’s!

Category : Dining Out, Food & Beverages

I’ll finally be able to have a Frappuccino again!  Starbucks has heard their customers and is now making frapuccino’s with a non-dairy base, allowing customers to select their preferred type of milk – so for me, soy!  It won’t be official until May 5 but some locations already have it…not everyone knows what vegan is or if stuff is non-dairy so the easiest way to ask your Starbucks is to simply ask if they’re making the new style of frappuccions.

Thanks to The Consumerist for sharing this exciting new info!

The Big Picture

Category : Dining Out, Food & Beverages

Today Starbucks is giving away free brewed coffee if you bring in your own mug.  I’ve been telling you all for the last year how much better for the environment it would be if you’d bring your own  mug instead of wasting so many trees on paper cups.  Now Starbucks is doing their part to encourage you to do the same.

Check out this video – this is pretty cool.

I know what many will say – it’s just a marketing ploy – but really, who cares?!  If it encourages only one person to start using a reusable mug every day then they’ve succeeded.  If they make money off doing that then more power to them!

If you don’t already have a reusable coffee mug, now is the time to invest.  Most coffee shops will give you 10 cents to 50 cents off each time.  Starbucks gives 10 cents off and Argo Tea (here in Chicago) give 50 cents off for using one of their mugs.  I bought an Argo Tea mug a couple of years ago for around $17.  After using it 34 times I already had my $17 back just from Argo – not evening including the 10 cents I saved when bringing it to Starbucks!
