Detox

Category : Food & Beverages, Health

Remember when I mentioned back in January how much I wanted to do the detox class at Karyn’s?  Well, guess, what??  I finally did it and it was amazing.  There were definitely some difficult days but all in all it was well worth it.  I learned a great deal about my body and how different foods affect me.  I was absolutely amazed at the HUGE impact it made on people with arthritis, problems sleeping, and many other conditions.  Prior to the detox I was vegan at home and as much as possible when I was out and about but now 100% vegan.  Shortly after coming off the detox I had a very dairy loaded meal (well, according to my scale) at a friend’s and the next day noticed some changes in my body – things that I’ve had for years, didn’t have during the detox, but got back after eating dairy.  Dairy is not necessary for our bodies and often causes problems for many people and as I found out, people most often don’t realize what big and little things it causes until they remove it from their diet and re-introduce it.  During the detox I got used to bringing my own food with me to parties so now that I’m used to it, it doesn’t seem to be a big deal to continue taking vegan things with me.  I didn’t want to be an inconvenience before, which is why I wasn’t 100% vegan.  I guess it just took being open with everyone about my detox and the different diet I was on for me to realize that it’s not that big of a deal to tell people that I don’t eat certain things.  I’m sure they’re not offended and I’m not inconveniencing them at all by bringing my own food – it’s not like I’m asking them to make a special meal for me :)

My goal is to do the detox at Karyn’s once a year.  Check out the details for yourself at Karyn’s Raw

I know I’ve mentioned it before, the dairy industry is a huge drain on the environment and it’s really not good for our bodies.  If you don’t believe me and would prefer the opinion of a medical professional, check out this video…

Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days

Category : Food & Beverages, Health

I haven’t really mentioned it yet, but I recently did a detox where I ate vegan raw for a month.  It was an amazing experience and I felt better than ever.  I am not a huge believer in the raw diet, although I’m just not at the point where I could commit to that every day of my life.  I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 11 and an almost vegan for nearly the last 3 years.  After coming off the detox I’m 99.9% vegan – there have been a couple of occasions where I had a bite of something with dairy.  Anyway, it is insane how powerful a raw diet is…check out this trailer for a movie produced by John Salley (a vegan)…I’ve seen it before, but thanks to Vegetarian Star for pointing it out to me again so I could share it with all of you.  I know it may sound weird and nasty to eat raw but you get used to it and begin to enjoy the food but most importantly how wonderful your body feels!

BPA on Receipts?! Where Else Will We Find It?!

Category : Health, Shopping

So now they’re saying there is BPA on receipts!  AND that it is more toxic than the BPA in plastic bottles!  YIKES!  I always take my receipt – even when I don’t need it so that I can recycle the paper, but now I think I’ll have to consider my health over the environment and take receipts ONLY  when ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!

Active Ion ionator $169

I want one!  I saw something similar a few years ago at one of those gadget stores but they don’t seem to carry them any more.  This seriously cleans WITHOUT chemicals.  I love that it doesn’t have a cord so it’s easy to carry around the house.  This is a fantastic invention!  We all need one!  Imagine how many bottles of different chemical solutions we could avoid and how much more room we’d have under our sinks!  Put this on your wedding registry, birthday list – whatever it takes!

Thanks to Zem’s List on Ecofabulous for introducing it to me!

Kitchen Sponges

Category : Food & Beverages, Health, Household

I just found these rules in the new Seventh Generation newsletter and figured they’re well worth sharing!  I’m proud to say that I already follow rules 1 and 3.  Goal for this week – get new sponges and mark one for counters and the other for dishes :)

  • Rule #1: Choose your sponges carefully. Many are made from polyester, polyurethane, and/or other non-renewable, non-biodegradable petroleum-based materials. They’re also increasingly treated with conventional antibacterial chemicals. A better option are sponges made from renewable, biodegradable cellulose, which will last longer, absorb more, and work harder. You can find untreated, natural cellulose sponges at almost any natural food store.
  • Rule #2: Practice safe sponging. I keep two different sponges, and never the twain shall meet: One is exclusively for counters and the other is only used on dishes. I clip a corner of the counter sponge to distinguish it. I also don’t use my kitchen sponge to clean up after meat preparation, on the floor, or anywhere else I think bacteria might lurk. Meat zones and other suspect areas get treated with Seventh Generation’s new disinfecting cleaner and recycled paper towels. Messes on the floor get another paper towel or two.
  • Rule #3: A sponge can’t clean unless it is too. According to a 2008 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) study, which looked at everything from soaking sponges in lemon juice to treating them with chlorine, only three techniques effectively sanitize sponges: Wash them in the dishwasher or microwave them on high for 60 seconds. The third choice is to boil them, but that’s not very energy efficient. These tactics should kill 99.99 of any bacteria present. Everything else, according to the USDA, is snake oil. Between sanitizings, keep your sponges high and dry. Wring them out after each use, and store them in a dry place. I found a cool little wire basket at the hardware store that suction-cups to the side of the sink and lets air circulate around my sponges so they dry faster.

Cranberry Granola – Two Moms In The Raw

Category : Food & Beverages, Health

I recently discovered Two Moms In The Raw granola and it is FANTASTIC!!!!  I’m doing a detox right now and am eating raw…sounds a little odd, yes, but it’s great! – I feel wonderful and it’s so much better for my body.  It’s actually super important to consume as much raw food as possible as cooking kills the enzymes which are necessary for digestion and nutrition.  So…when possible, opt for raw foods.  This Cranberry Granola by Two Moms In The Raw is delicious!!  And not to mention, vegan and organic!
