Easy steps in cutting down home toxins

Although pollution, nutrition, and outdoor issues take up much of the environmental debate, indoor air quality is also a major issue. Keeping toxins out of the home and keeping this indoor air quality at a safe level is of major importance to families all over. By taking some of these holistic and easy steps around the house, we can cut down on health risks like mesothelioma, respiratory problems, and other forms of cancer.

Keeping some parts of nature inside the house can be a great way to cut down on the toxins inside your home. Plants thrive and kill off many of these toxins that can easily spread throughout the home. A couple of the best plants for improving air quality around the home are the areca palm and the English ivy.

Keeping shoes in the garage or constantly wiping them before coming in from outside is another way to cut down on the toxins in your home. If you aren’t used to doing this, it may take a while to adjust, but doing so can be very beneficial for the home. Often times wearing shoes into the house can continue to make floors dirty, as well as also possibly tracking pesticides in. Continued exposure to pesticides can lead to some severe health risks such as skin irritation and they can be particularly harmful to young children.

Keeping your windows open as much as possible is another great way to improve the air quality around the house. Many people often look to get fresh air in the house, but doing so is also removing the stale air that’s been sitting around inside for long periods of time. A number of toxins could be floating around for days at a time.

Some older homes may be at risk of asbestos in their insulation. Asbestos was used as a common material until the 70’s and 80’s when earlier exposure started leading to cases of mesothelioma. With mesothelioma life expectancy being a severe average of one year following diagnosis, officials started to ban the use of asbestos in structures. Some older homes may still contain this toxin in their insulation, so having them checked for this material can be extremely beneficial. Luckily, there are also a number of suitable, cheap, and sustainable alternatives in insulation such as foam spray and cotton fiber.

These are just a few of the easy ways to improve indoor air quality around the home. Of course many of these toxins can be dangerous, so taking some of these steps can certainly cut down on the risk of health problems, while making the house more sustainable and energy efficient.

New Bottles for Seventh Generation Laundry!

Category : Household

I’m super excited about these new laundry detergent bottles from Seventh Generation!  They’re made from 70% recycled cardboard and 30% recycled newspaper.  Obviously there is some plastic involved in the cap and the inner pouch but this is fantastic!  I don’t purchase their detergent since I use the Green Wash Ball but I do use their fabric softener so I’m hoping they have good results with these and use them for their fabric softener as well!  Read more about them here

Earth Hour - Organisers

At 8.30 PM on Saturday 26 March 2011, lights will switch off around the globe for Earth Hour.

This year, when the lights go back on, think about what you can change in your daily life that will benefit the planet. To share your stories, thoughts and ideas and to get inspiration from what others are doing. So share what you’re going to do and they’ll tell the world.

Together our actions add up.

The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life: Cruelty-Free Crafts, Recipes, Beauty Secrets and More

Back in November I was fortunate enough to meet Milsser Elliott at Moo Shoes NYC!  I purchased her new book (which she signed for me!) The Vegan Girl’s Guide to Life and finally got around to reading it on our holiday in Puerto Rico.  I loved it!  There’s definitely a lot that I already know about veganism but there’s also always plenty to learn.  I pick up a lot of new tidbits.  Who would have ever thought that my husband’s favorite Doritos – Sweet & Spicy – are actually vegan?!  This book would be PERFECT for a new vegan or someone considering going vegan.  They’ll quickly realize how easy it really is to live without animal products.  You’ll find everything from recipes to random packaged foods you’d surprisingly find to be vegan, to vegan tatoo ink.

January Pure Green Magazine

The new issue of Pure Green Magazine is out!  This is a new favorite of mine.  They do a fabulous job of covering everything green – clothing, cosmetics, food, architecture, decorating, and tons more.  Be sure to check it out!  I do love a printed magazine (I know – it’s a horrible eco-sin) but this is unbelievably easy to read online!

Old Crayons to New, Cute Crayons

Category : Fun Things To Do, Household

Assorted

I don’t have kids and considering my ususal topics on here I don’t know how many of you – my readers – have kids.  However, I saw this on Josie Maran’s blogand I think it’s just the greatest thing ever.  When I was young I collected my fair share of crayons and after a time they ended up in a big, orange Halloween bucket.  The little bits and pieces were pretty worthless but even at that age I wasn’t one to throw things out.  If I remember correctly I ended up packaging up the gently used ones into little packs in plastic baggies and tied them with ribbon and donated them along with other gently used toys to a toy drive at the fire department.  It was  a nice gesture on my part but I have a feeling whoever did the sorting likely trashed my baggies of crayons seeing as a box of new crayons could be scored for $0.99.  Anyway, my whole point here is that had I known that I could’ve just melted them down in baking trays and turned them into adorably shaped multicolored crayons, I’d have been all over that.  I think these are absolutely adorable and I sure hope I don’t forget about this idea by the time I have kids with old, broken crayons.

Tree Mold

Although posted on Josie’s blog, the actual idea came from Heather at Shivaya Naturals.  A million thanks to Josie for introducing me to this blog – I’m going to be a regular reader!

Christmas Tree Skirt

Category : Fun Things To Do, Household

I just finished making my tree skirt and I LOVE it!  I got the pattern from Martha Stewart.    The fabric I used is eco-friendly felt made from recycled materials.  I wish it would have been bigger – this pattern is definitely for a small tree!  I followed the pattern and then bought 2 yards of green sequins and hot glued them on as a border.  I’m short sequins so I”ll have to run back sometime for about another 1/2 yard but I don’t even need to worry about it now as that part is in the back of the tree so it can’t be seen.

Organic Bath Towels

Portico Bath Towels, 100% Cotton

We recently got new towels for our bathroom.  I had been searching for quite some time for the perfect environmentally friendly towels.  The first set I  selected from The Company Store didn’t work out color-wise.  Catalog shopping can often be difficult :)   So, I happened to come across these towels by Portico at Bed Bath and Beyond!  They’re 100% organic cotton.  At first I wasn’t crazy about them as they’re thinner than I like, however after buying a few to test run, we realized that they are super soft and we don’t really miss the thickness of our old towels.  The bath towels are $14.99 each and the great part is that with them being at BB&B you can use the 20% off coupon and get the bath towels for just $12.00!  We’ve now washed them several times and they still are super soft and cozy so I’ve purchased more to complete the set.  Check out how great they look in our bathroom!

Pet Rescue Alert Window Card

1

Category : Animals, Household

Thanks to Girle Girl Army for pointing this out to me!  For Fire Safety Month PetPlan is offering a free service to customize a rescue alert window card with your pets photo.  We’ve always had a window sticker from ASPCA which allows you to write in with a marker how many dog and cats you have but this one goes a step further in allowing you to include the photo so the firemen know who they’re looking for, what their name is, what their nickname is and where they might be hiding.  Winston has never really hidden anywhere so I didn’t fill in that part.  I just can say how great I think this is!

Create yours now!

The bonus is that for every 100 of these alert cards made, PetPlan will donate a Wag’N Oxygen Mask Kit to a rescue company in need.

Fireplaces in the Fall – Cupcakes and Cashmere

Category : Household

I absolutely love this idea from Cupcakes and Cashmere…What a beautiful way to bring autumn inside!

check out her full post…

I found mini clothespins at Paper Source and tried it myself…after a few hours my leaves didn’t look very pretty any more…not sure if there is anything I can do to prevent the wrinkling.  Maybe I’ll see if I iron them if they’ll flatten and stay flat.
