bamboos

Bamboos are the fastest growing woody plants in the world. A bamboo grove also releases some 35 percent more oxygen into the air than a similar-sized stand of trees, and it matures (and can be replanted) within seven years (compared to 30-50 years for a stand of trees), helping to improve soil conditions and prevent erosion along the way. Bamboo is so fast-growing that it can yield 20 times more timber than trees on the same area. When comparing bamboo to cotton you should know that bamboo is much more resiliant to pests and is thus most often grown without any toxic chemical pest management unlike conventional cotton. It’s great to know that by purchasing bamboo products over others you’ve helped to reduce the amount of chemicals released into the environment.

AMY SACKS & The Pixie Project

Category : Animals, Fashion

I’m a HUGE animal lover so The Pixie Project is one of the reasons why I love AMY SACKS eyewear and accessories…

The Pixie Project is named for the abused terrier mix that was rescued by Amy Sacks, and adopted by her mother Ann, who is president of AMY SACKS Eyewear and Accessories.

Beginning as a sophomore in college, Ann’s daughter Amy began to foster homeless pets. By the time she graduated, she had used her time and her wages from waitress work to assist a mobile vet and provide emergency rescue and adoption services for the Humane Society. Today, Amy is working to establish The Pixie Project to provide spay and neuter services, as well as other veterinary services, for pets in low-income families.

AMY SACKS Eyewear and Accessories was founded in part to provide funding for The Pixie Project which is devoted to animal rescue and low-cost spay and neuter programs.  AMY SACKS contributes a part of its profits to The Pixie Project, and has also launched an iconic eyeglass case which communicates a love for animals and a commitment to their health and security. The case sells for only $10.00 – of which 100% of Amy Sacks proceeds from the sale of this case are contributed to The Pixie Project!

Bamboo Masa - Cherry

Bamboo Masa - Cherry

I’m very excited about the new eyeglasses I just ordered for Eric and myself.  They’re from AMY SACKS eyewear and accessories

The first thing that caught my attention was the bamboo frames.  They have hand carved stained bamboo temples with a complementary acetate frame front(mine will be cherry).

Bamboo is renowned for its beauty, strength and sustainability. It is lightweight, long wearing and less susceptible to warping than wood. Bamboo does not require replanting after harvest and some species can grow more than two feet in a single day. Farmed bamboo helps reduce soil erosion, produces oxygen and provides animal habitats.

The second thing I liked was that part of the proceeds go to The Pixie Project to provide spay and neuter services, as well as other veterinary services, for pets in low-income families.

Eric is getting the frames below – not bamboo but part of the proceeds will go to pets in need which is fantastic!
