Welcome To Norwex!

Category : Household

I’m so excited to tell you all about Norwex!  I am in LOVE with their cleaning products – I seriously want to clean all the time!  I’m always in search of the best eco-friendly cleaning products and I’ve finally found them!  The best part is that their antibacteria microfiber cloths clean with just water!  NO chemicals!  Crazy but so true!

Descaler

The tiny fibers in the cloth grab all the bacteria on a surface and what isn’t washed away during rinsing, is killed within 24 hours by the tiny bits of silver imbedded in the cloth!  The make-up remover cloths even take my mascara off with just water!  The kitchen cloths are insanely soft and absorbent – you’ll be amazed!  But there are so many other fantastic products to try - I’m loving the descaler for the glass doors on my shower – they make cleaning them a breeze!

Green Spring Cleaning

Category : Household

I know I’ve posted plenty of make your own cleaners before, but I just came across these in a PETA Newsletter so I thought I’d share them.  It never hurts to be reminded of more ways to clean green :)

All-Purpose Cleaner
To make a simple cleaner for wiping down counter tops, sinks, and cupboards, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.

For cleaning linoleum and tile floors, place this same mixture in a bucket and dip your mop in.

Air Freshener
To get rid of unpleasant odors, leave out a halved lime (make sure that the cut side is facing upward) in a bowl of baking soda. Instead of throwing the lime and baking soda into the trash when you’re finished using them, grind them up in your garbage disposal instead to freshen the surrounding area.

If you’re a coffee drinker, don’t toss out your coffee grounds after use. Instead, put them in a bowl to absorb odors.

To keep kitchen cupboards and drawers smelling fresh, add a few dried bay leaves.

Fabric Freshener
To freshen couch cushions, use a spray bottle filled with water and two drops of an essential oil such as lemon, orange, or peppermint. Essential oils are very potent, so one or two drops is all you need. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients and mist whenever freshening is needed.

Carpet Freshener
Crush a couple of bay leaves and mix them with a bowl of baking soda. Add one to two drops of an essential oil and mix with a spoon. Sprinkle this mixture on rugs and carpets, and allow it to stand for a few minutes before you vacuum it up.

Cooktops and Ovens
For cleaning cooktops, dust with a bit of baking soda and squeeze some lime juice over it. You can use the cut lime half as a scouring tool to scrub the cooktop. Use a toothbrush to scour any hard-to-reach spots. For tough spots, make a paste out of some lime juice and baking soda, and let it sit on the problem areas for several minutes before scouring.

For ovens, make a paste out of lime juice, baking soda, and salt. Wipe out the inside of the oven with a damp sponge, then apply the paste. Allow the paste to stand for about a half-hour, then scrub it off using a scouring pad.

Hard-to-Reach Grime
Have an oddly shaped vase that you can’t seem to clean the inside of? Squeeze a drop of dish soap or some vinegar into the vase and add water along with a small amount of dried rice. Cover the top with your hand, shake and swirl the rice around, then rinse.

ionator HOM

Active Ion ionator $169

I want one!  I saw something similar a few years ago at one of those gadget stores but they don’t seem to carry them any more.  This seriously cleans WITHOUT chemicals.  I love that it doesn’t have a cord so it’s easy to carry around the house.  This is a fantastic invention!  We all need one!  Imagine how many bottles of different chemical solutions we could avoid and how much more room we’d have under our sinks!  Put this on your wedding registry, birthday list – whatever it takes!

Thanks to Zem’s List on Ecofabulous for introducing it to me!

TWIST Loofah Sponge

TWIST Loofah Sponge

I’ve been loving TWIST products for the last couple of years.  We all need sponges for cleaning and of course over time they get tossed and end up in the landfill and over the years your own personal contribution to that big landfill of sponges is probably a lot larger than you think. TWISt products are bio-degradable and made from natural things – like the scrubby made of loofah!  They hold up will and last quite awhile.  I know sponges can get germy but you can always toss your sponge in the microwave for 1 minute after using it to kill the germs and thus get a longer life out of it.

Seventh Generation Dish Liquid

Category : Household

I’m a HUGE fan of Seventh Generation’s products – along with the company itself.  I’m excited to hear they’ve made some great new changes to their dish liquid!

PCR-Dish-Soap

Their new formula cleans 50% more dishes than their current dish liquid, and comes in a new 25oz bottle made from 90% post-consumer recycled plastic, which reduces their reliance on non-renewable resources by 50%. Seventh Generation’s new Environmental Savings Statement looks like this:

  • If every household in the U.S. replaced just one bottle of 25oz petroleum-based dishwashing liquid with our plant-derived product, we could save enough oil to heat and cool 7,400 U.S. homes for a year.

The new formula is still biodegradable, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and can be found in all three of our fragrances: Free & Clear, Lavender & Floral Mint, and Lemongrass & Clementine Zest.

Give it a try! Click here to save $1 on any Seventh Generation dishwashing product. And click here to read the full story of how they developed their new bottle.

Carnivale – Chicago

I absolutely love Carnivale.  The atmosphere is fun and the Latin American cuisine is delicious.  I love it even more now that I discovered how green they are.  They are making efforts to reduce their impact on the environment from the food they serve to the cleaning products they use.

They source a lot of their food from farms in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin.  They’re cooking with cage-free organic eggs and sustainable seafood.  Their chicken and pork are from local Gunthorp Farms and in the summer the grow veggies on the restaurant’s roof-top garden!  Even their mojitos are made with organic mint from local farmers and they’re filtering their water at the source so it is 99.9% purified for drinking and even cooking!  They recycle and they’re working with Gunthorp Farms to recycle non-trans fat fryer oil as an alternative fuel for the farm.
