Clear the Air This Fall

Category : Health, Household

autumn-windowFall is here – which also means cold nights where you’re less likely to keep the windows open.  How can we eliminate some of the toxic air in our homes?  Read the great blog article below!

By robin – September 21, 2009 (Seventh Generation’s 7 Gen Blog)

Your air, that is. Visit your local retailer for great deals on Seventh Generation products starting this week. As winter approaches, we open our windows less, trapping polluted air inside our homes. The easiest way to keep your home healthy is to use all-natural cleaning products that won’t leave behind harmful chemical residue or pollute indoor air. Here are 9 more ways to clear the air this fall.

  1. Open your windows! EPA research has found that indoor air can contain levels of pollutants 2-5 times higher than the air outside.
  2. Place welcome mats near your doors to remove particles and pollutants carried in on shoes.
  3. Use natural cosmetic, personal care, and feminine hygiene products. Conventional versions of these products often contain many untested and unregulated chemicals.
  4. Dust with a damp cloth to collect and remove dust instead of stirring it back into the air.
  5. Use paper products made from unbleached or non-chlorine bleached recycled paper, which help prevent waste, deforestation, and the pollution created by traditional paper manufacturing.
  6. Store food in #1, #2, #4, or #5 plastic containers, which are less likely to leach unsafe chemicals. Never heat food or serve hot food in plastic of any kind.
  7. Use a chlorine-free dishwasher detergent to keep your dishwasher’s steam free of unhealthy chlorine vapors.
  8. When it’s time to buy new home furnishings, choose those made from solid wood — not pressed woods and particleboard — which often use glues that emit formaldehyde vapors.
  9. Stay informed. When it comes to ideas for healthy homes, there are always useful new things to learn. Share your ideas below.

Is your paper as recycled as you think?

Category : Uncategorized

So many paper products are now labeled recycled – which of course is wonderful and always exciting to see.  But – how truly recycled is that paper?  There are two phrases you’ll see – Post Consumer Waste and Pre-Consumer Waste.  The latter is really just left over bits from the manufacturing process which immediately gets re-used – that’s great but they should do that anyway!  Post-Consumer waste is the stuff we toss in our recycle bins after its first life and then gets re-made into something in its second life.  This is the type of recycled paper you should be using.  Pre-Consumer recycled paper is really a joke – of course they’re going to recycle the wasted bits from processing their paper, it makes complete sense – they’re not making  much of an effort there!  The point is – when buying recycled paper products read the fine print and make a responsible choice!  If only Pre-Consumer recycled products are available then that’s an easy choice but otherwise go with Post-Consumer.

Save 163,000 Trees!

All you have to do is a replace one box of your regular facial tissues with a box of 100 percent recycled ones.  If every household in America did that, 163,000 trees would be saved.  Making it easy is the Natural Resources Defense Council, which has put together a handy wallet-size card of which brands of paper products (paper towels to toilet paper) are a boon to the environment.  Download the card!

I know the recycled stuff isn’t as soft as the virgin tissues.  I admit that when I’m sick I will occasionally break down and buy a nice soft box of tissues but that is typically just once a year so I don’t feel too badly about it considering all year long I only purchase recycled tissues.  Hopefully they’ll continue making progress with creating softer recycled tissues so I won’t need to do cheat once a year!

Tell tissue manufacturers to stop using virgin wood for throwaway products. [from the Natural Resources Defense Council website]
If a brand you buy for your home doesn’t have any recycled content, contact the manufacturer (click hereto send a message to paper giant Kimberly-Clark). Tell the company to use more recycled fibers, to avoid sourcing from ecologically valuable forests such as those in the Cumberland Plateau and Canadian boreal, and to ensure any virgin fibers used are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Saving forests also helps reduce global warming pollution.
