Fur-Ever Home Board Game

Category : Animals

This game – Fur-Ever Home is just the cleverist idea!  It’s a great way to teach kids and even adults about pet adoption.  $5 of every purchase ($34.99 + shipping) goes to an animal rescue group – I was super excited to see PAWS Chicago listed as a shelter to which they’ll donate the $5!

Pet Adoption Postal Stamps

I’m so excited about these new stamps!!

Ellen launched these new stamps on Thursday on her show.  I’m so excited the USPS is spotlighting pet adoption – it’s so important!  Be sure to purchase these stamps when they come out on April 30 – the more stamps purchased, the more meals that will be donated by Halo, Ellen’s pet food company, to feed shelter pets!!!  (up to one million dollars!!!!)

I think I’ll be using these stamps for my wedding invitations!

A Fight Against Barkworks – STOP SELLING PETS!

Category : Animals

As you all know I am EXTREMELY against purchasing pets from pet stores.  There is not a single reputable breeder who would allow their animals to be sold in a shop.  Regardless of what they tell you, all pet stores get their animals from mills.  Of course they wouldn’t tell you the truth – that would be bad for business!  If you purchase a dog from a pet shop you’re fueling the industry – continuing the cycle!  Please, please, please DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM A PET STORE!  I can’t beg you enough.  The conditions at these mills are disgusting!  Check out this video from CNN…

The Companion Animal Protection Society (www.CAPS-web.org) organized this multi-org protest to uphold CA Supreme Court Law, making history for animal rights and for free speech in the state of California. Barkworks is supplied by puppy mills in the midwest with many USDA violations. It is unconscionable to breed, sell or buy, while 5 million companion animals die in our nation’s shelters every year. The pet trade industry is mistreating companion animals in order to supply pet stores and Internet dog dealers who call themselves “responsible breeders.” Puppy mill fronts will no longer be able to hide inside CA malls as they have before this peaceful assembly by concerned citizens. The USDA licenses commercial breeding factories. These are not responsible breeders. Responsible breeders do not sell to pet shops or ship animals to the public.

From Gulf Coast Greyhounds…

Why Do Greyhounds Make Good Pets?

Greyhounds have been bred to be fast, healthy, intelligent, sociable, and good tempered. Greyhounds spend most of their lives in the company of other dogs, their trainers, and handlers. Greyhounds have all the advantages of breeding and training when it comes to being a good pet. Their sociability makes them great with other pets (including cats!). Their temperament makes them wonderful around children and friends. Their intelligence and breed make them perfect house pets, clean, quiet, and a loving companion.

What Should I Expect If I Adopt A Greyhound?

The most common misconception concerning greyhounds is that they are hyperactive. It is actually the opposite. Greyhounds are a gentle, mild, quiet animal by nature. A greyhound coming into your home will be very puppy like, curious, and affectionate. Everything is brand new to a retired greyhound, but remember they are very smart. Certain house manners will have to be learned as greyhounds have never seen anything of family life. Stairs, cats, mirrors, cars, etc. are all things you will have to teach your greyhound. When going up stairs, you will need to place your dogs feet one at a time and help it along. Going down stairs requires a firm grip on the collar and a very slow walk down. For any correction, a firm NO! is all that should be needed. If your greyhound even looks at your cat, jump right in and say NO! It will quickly learn the right behavior towards a smaller animal. Never leave your greyhound alone with your family cat until you are sure they get along. Your tone of voice and a firm NO! will quickly let your greyhound know how to behave around your home.

Hooray For The Underdog!

Category : Animals

I just ordered some PRECIOUS cards from Hooray For The Underdog!  Janet Healey and Joe Grisham have captured so many fabulous photos of dogs – many of them rescue dogs.  I love that on the backs of the cards they give a little info on the dog(s) featured – personality, rescue history, etc. This special series of images can be purchased online as prints, greeting cards, notepads, folders, and other gift items. 10% of the proceeds from the sale of each item directly goes toward helping animal welfare groups to provide spay/neuter and adoption services, emergency relief and improving the quality of life for Underdogs (and cats) across America.

Check them out online – they’re absolutely adorable – I can’t wait to receive them!  They’re unique and for a good cause!

The Shelter Pet Project – HSUS

Category : Animals

Winston (my shelter pet) wanted me to share this with all of you…

Do you ever wonder what happens to a cat whose owners go through a nasty breakup over an affair? Or a dog whose cowardly owner leaves him on the side of the road? It’s a sad fact, but these pets end up at animal shelters through no fault of their own.

We can feel sad for the dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and even guinea pigs in shelters, or we can take action and spread the word that shelter animals make great pets. Today we’re proud to announce the launch of an unprecedented advertising campaign aimed at doing just that: The Shelter Pet Project.

Beginning yesterday, several humorous, meaningful Public Service Announcements hit the airwaves across the country. Why wait? You can watch the commercials now and even find a shelter pet of your own at The Shelter Pet Project’s website.

The Shelter Pet Project, a collaborative effort by The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund, and the Ad Council, in partnership with the entire animal welfare community, is designed to encourage pet lovers to make shelters their first choice when they decide they want to add another pet to their family.
