Vegan in Charleston, SC

Category : Dining Out

Last week my sister and I were in South Carolina for her spring break. We spent a day in Charleston and found this adorable French cafe that had a few fantastic vegan options for me and plenty of vegetarian options for her!

Gaulart et Maliclet Cafe is at 98 Broad Street in Charleston, in the heart of the adorable shopping area.

I ordered the O’Vegan which was olive tapenade, tomato and fresh basil on toasted baguette with gazpacho. It was delicious! Lauren had the vegetarian Croq’ Baguette, which was Dijon, tomato, zucchini, and melted cheese on French bread.

I would highly suggest stopping here if you’re in Charleston. Everyone sits at a bar, so it’s close quarters but it’s cozy and the interior of the building has a lot of old character.

Cream of Cauliflower Soup

Category : Recipes

The other night I threw together this delicious and super easy vegan cream of cauliflower soup. I love cookbooks but I rarely seem to use them for anything other than baking as I typically create a meal out of what I have on hand. That being said, I don’t have a precise recipe for this soup but that’ll be part of the fun for you – personalize it as you like.

sautee 1/2 onion in olive oil

add in 3/4 head of cauliflower and about 3/4 cup of broth (I used a table spoon or so of miso paste and diluted it in boiling water then added it to the onions and cauliflower), sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste and cook until soft

while that is cooking chop one or two carrots and sautee in another pan (I used two carrots seeing as Eric is a huge carrot fan – he loved it but I would’ve been happier with just one carrot)

pour mixture into blender add enough non-dairy milk (I used So Delicious Coconut Milk) to get it blend and blend until smooth (or use one of those hand held immersion blenders – I normally do that with soup but this time thought it might be faster to do it all in the blender and sure was)

pour it back into the pot add a bit of garlic powder and a bit of nutritional yeast (I added around 1/4 of a cup) and the sauteed carrots – add more So Delicious Coconut Milk if you want it thinner

I served the soup with a garnish of those fried onions you often see on green bean cassaroles at Thanksgiving and more fresh ground pepper

super easy and great for a cold fall evening

Pozole Vegan Soup at Chipotle

Category : Dining Out, Food & Beverages

Chipotle just rolled out a new vegan soup so I gave it a try at lunch yesterday.  I was a bit confused when thinking it was a soup the guy kept asking what stuff I wanted on it.  Basically they made it like a burrito bowl.  I just added rice and the tomato salsa – which I’m glad I added something since otherwise it would’ve been just one ladle of soup!  The soup itself is a spicy tomato with these giant soft corn kernels…I’m sure they have a name but I don’t really know what they were.  It was pretty good.  I certainly won’t be craving it or going out of my way to get it but since there is a Chipotle close to my office it’ll be nice to add into my lunch rotation to mix things up a bit.  I really appreciate them offering a vegan soup – it’s so easy to do but not many places are that conscious still.  The menu does refer to it as vegetarian rather than vegan but I read about it being vegan in Crain’s yesterday and then confirmed with the server that it was safe for me.  I think they probably find it easier to call it vegetarian than vegan – the word vegan can still be a little scary to some people

Lemonade – Los Angeles

My Delicious Lunch at Lemonade - L.A.

Last weekend I went back to Los Angeles to visit friends, enjoy the warmer weather and eat at all of my old favorite restaurants.  I did however try a new spot and am so glad I did.

Lemonade has three locations – on Beverly in West Hollywood (where I went!), on Flower downtown, on Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach.  There will soon be another at the MOCA!

The restaurant is super eco-friendly from what I could tell.  I suppose they could be more eco-friendly by using real plates and flatware for inside diners but since they use disposable they are good about using utencils that are bio-degradable, recycled paper bowls and plates and recyclable/bio-degradable cups and take out containers.

OK – to the important part – the FOOD and DRINKS!

I have to start with the LEMONADE of course!  I had the Rosemary Watermelon Lemonade and it was the most amazing thing!  They also had Cucumber Mint, Ginger Peach and Blueberry Mint (which my girlfriend got – also amazing!).  The lemonades are all very colorful, full of flavor and very refreshing.

As far as the actual food goes – I don’t even know where to begin.  First off there are PLENTY of VEGGIE options – so many in fact that I had a very difficult time making my selections.  I opted for the Red Top Turnip Soup, Roast Cauliflower with Golden Raisins, Almonds and Curry, and Avocado & Cherry Tomatoes with Pine Nuts in a Lime Vinaigrette.  Turnip Soup may sound bland and boring but I assure you it was full of flavor.  I’m a huge curry fan so the cauliflower was amazing – the adition of raisings added a sweet touch to this savory dish.  I will definitely try to replicated these dishes at home.  My friend Lesli had Israeli Couscous with Wild Mushrooms, Parmesan and Truffle Vinaigrette and something with cubed sweet potatoes but I can’t find it on their menue now – I tried both and they were fantastic.  I think she may have had the seared ahi as well along with a couple of other sides that I can’t recall.  She loved them all but one which was too much like cole-slaw, which she doesn’t like.

I love that the food is set up deli-style so you can try a little of several different items.

For meat eaters they have tons of different pot roasts which look so cute in their colorful LeCrueset roasting dishes.

To complete my meal I had a small red velvet cupcake. The size was perfect – not a full cupcake but not a one bite mini.  It was moist and delicious – much better than the one I had the day prior at Toast (sorry L.A. friends, but I’ve decided theirs are always too done and not moist enough for my liking).

If you live in Los Angeles put this at the top of your list of places to try.  If you don’t live in L.A. nor are you going to be visiting soon, check out their menu for ideas.  They give enough detail for each of the their marketplace sides that you could have a go at replicating them.

Hannah’s Bretzel – Chicago

Category : Food & Beverages

I don’t know why I haven’t been going to Hannah’s Bretzel over the last couple of years as I had heard about it but now that I’ve finally been in - I’M HOOKED!  I LOVE it!  The food is organic and they make every effort to be green – they serve their food in recyclable and biodegradable containers and they have a recycling bin next to the trash bin!

I had the barley soup and it was fabulous – so glad it’s a staple year round.  Eric and I both had a very difficult time deciding on sandwiches as there were so many fabulous options…and don’t let me get started on the WALL of chocolate bars!!!!  Can you believe they seriously have a WALL of CHOCOLATE!  I was in heaven!!!  Ok, but back to the sandwiches, they were fantastic.  Eric kept gushing about the bread and I was rather impressed that there were 3 vegetarian sandwich options and one was vegan!  I can’t wait to go back!

I went to the 180 W Wells (corner of Wells & Washington) location but now they have another one at 233 N Michigan in the Illinois Center Concourse

Zucchini Soup

Category : Food & Beverages, Recipes

The other night I got creative with my local, organic produce.  I’m sure you also experience the same thing – you only have a few things left and aren’t sure what to do with them but you need to use them up.  So…I made a lovely zucchini soup.  I sauteed chunks of zucchini, onions and a carrot in garlic olive oil.  After the veggies had softened, I threw them in the food processor with a little sea salt and pepper and a few splashes of almond milk.  I had also sauteed a portobello mushroom which I sliced and put on top of the soup along with a dollop of soy cream (mock sour cream).  So simple and yet so delicious.  Play around with the veggies and seasonings and create your own delicious soup with local, organic veggies!  Enjoy!

Protein Bar Chicago

Category : Dining Out, Food & Beverages, Health

I’ve found a fabulous new place to eat in the loop.  The new Protein Bar Chicago is super healthy and every item is packed with protein.  They’ve got amazing smoothies, soups, wraps and fun bowls that contain quinoa or oats, a milk, fruit, etc.  I’m super impressed that they offer vegan milks such as almond, rice and of course soy.  They use agave nectar as a sweetener which I also love as it doesn’t spike blood sugar the way regular sugar does.

The other day I had the Oak Street Peach Smoothie – vanilla protein, choice of milk, peaches and agave nectar.  It was sweet, creamy, fruity and kept me

This morning I had the Quinoa Feel It – warm quinoa topped with fresh blueberries, almonds, your choice of milk and drizzled with agave nectar.

For lunch I had the Vegetarian Chili which is a great hearty chili with a bit of a kick.

Their menu gives you the breakdown of calories, grams of protein, fiber, fat and sugar for each item.

Stop in and enjoy it yourself!!
