The season of dry lips has begun. My favorite remedy is Vitamin E, which I love because it’s as natural as you can get – obviously no parabens, chemicals, etc. and it even looks great! It basically looks like clear lip gloss but it is far more moisturizing and is totally healty to ingest – unlike gloss, it’s actually good for you if you lick some off. The only drawback is that it can be a little messy. I take a capsule and prick it with a pin to make a tiny hole so not a lot comes out at a time. Just squeeze it on – if you get too much lick it right off – Vitamin E is good for your body! I keep one capsule on my night stand on this little plate so it is handy and then the plate is easily washable once the capsule is empty. I keep another in a little pill box in my hand bag to use on the go.

Flax Oil

One teaspoon of flaxseed oil contains 2.5 g of ALA.

One tablespoon of ground flaxseeds contains 1.6 g of ALA.

If flaxseeds are not ground, there is a chance they will not be digested. They can be ground in a blender (works best with a large amount) or coffee grinder, and then stored in the freezer. Ground flaxseeds can be sprinkled on cereal or used in baked goods.

Cooking flaxseed oil damages the ALA, but it can be put on warm food such as toast. Flaxseed oil should be kept in the refrigerator.

A straight teaspoon of flaxseed oil does not taste so great. Some people use cinnamon-flavored, tablets, or put it on toast or salad to make it taste better.

Lately many people have started to eat less meat, eggs and dairy for environmental reasons. I became a vegetarian at 11 and a couple of years ago eliminated nearly all eggs and dairy from my diet. After a comment made to me the other day I decided now is a good time to share with you some information on vegetarianism and to de-bunk the myths that vegetarians/vegans don’t get proper nutrients. As you can see below it is very easy to get the proper amount of protein from plant products.

The American Dietetic Association states:

“Plant protein can meet requirements when a variety of plant foods is consumed and energy needs are met. Research indicates that an assortment of plant foods eaten over the course of a day can provide all essential amino acids and ensure adequate nitrogen retention and use in healthy adults, thus complementary proteins do not need to be consumed at the same meal.”

Experts recommend that adult vegans eat .4 g of protein per day for every pound of healthy body weight.

Blackstrap molasses is a natural sweetener with big health benefits. I have a tablespoon of it every day to take advantage of the iron, calcium, manganese, copper, magnesium, potassium and vitamin B6 that is packed inside. It is somewhat of an acquired taste but since I love it, it goes down easily and often works to satisfy my sweet-tooth!

Blackstrap molasses has been said to cure or help with many conditions such as constipation, diabetes, anemia, anxiety, acne, fibroid tumours, insomnia, arthritic pain, high blood pressure, heart palpitations and symptoms of menopause. Some people have reported grey hair returning to the original color.
